There is a conversation I have with every dyer I work with, and it is never the one they expect.
They expect me to ask about shade, fastness, whether the colour will hold. I ask what is in the dye. Most of the time there is a pause, because nobody making hijabs usually asks.
I ask because of something I did not know when I started: the fabric you wear all day can genuinely irritate your skin, and the dye is often the reason.
If your neck itches, this might be why
Textile contact dermatitis is a real, documented thing. Redness, itching, sometimes small bumps — and it shows up exactly where fabric presses, rubs, and holds sweat. For us that means the neck, behind the ears, the hairline, under the pin.
Here is the part worth knowing. The dyes most often responsible are a family called disperse dyes. They are so commonly behind dye allergy that specific ones are included in the standard patch tests dermatologists use to work out what someone is reacting to.
And disperse dyes have one defining characteristic: they are used to colour synthetic fibres. Polyester, nylon, acetate. They exist because those fibres will not take ordinary dye.
So the dyes most associated with textile rashes are, by their chemistry, the dyes on synthetic cloth. Cotton and linen are coloured with different classes of dye altogether, far less often implicated.
If you have ever had a persistent itch along your neckline and blamed your detergent, that is worth sitting with for a moment. It is a close cousin of the hairline breakouts so many of us assume are a skincare problem.
The quieter reason
Rashes are the visible problem. There is a subtler one underneath.
A specific subset of azo dyes can break down — including through contact with skin and sweat — and release compounds called aromatic amines. Several of those are classified as carcinogenic. That is why the restriction exists, and why the EU and India both prohibit those particular dyes in fabric worn against skin.
It is a subset, not the whole family. Most azo dyes are perfectly ordinary, and I am not going to tell you otherwise. But that subset is real, and someone in the chain has to actually care enough to check.
Why it matters more for us
Look at the phrase the rule uses. Prolonged skin contact.
Your hijab sits on your hairline, your forehead, your ears, your neck. Ten hours. Twelve. Every day. In heat, and damp with sweat for much of it.
Warmth and moisture are exactly when dye is most likely to move from cloth onto skin. There is very little else in anyone's wardrobe worn that closely, for that long, that consistently.
That is why this stopped being a detail for me and became the first thing I check.
What we do instead
Our cloth is handwoven from natural fibre, coloured with dyes free of the restricted azo compounds, and we do not put synthetic finishes on it. That applies to everything — the handwoven hijabs in muslin, cotton and mulberry silk, and the linen abayas alike.
That last part is simpler than it sounds. Good cotton, spun fine enough by hand, is already soft — it does not need a softener sprayed on to fake it. Linen is supposed to feel like linen. When the cloth is right to begin with, there is nothing to cover up.
What I actually want
I think about the girl pinning her scarf at seven in the morning, already late, not thinking about any of this. She should not have to. She should be able to pick something up and trust it.
Making that true is my job, not hers. It is why we weave slowly, why we ask our dyers uncomfortable questions, and why the range is smaller than it could be.
